BioThane Long Line Collection: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best length for a dog recall training lead?

For most recall training, a 10m to 15m BioThane long line is the "sweet spot." It provides enough distance for your dog to explore and practice "coming when called" while allowing you to maintain control. For city parks or decompression walks, a 5m lead is often preferred, while 20m+ is best for tracking or open fields.

Is BioThane better than nylon for long lines?

Yes. Unlike nylon, BioThane is 100% waterproof and stink-proof. It won't absorb water, become heavy when wet, or collect burrs and sand. It is also much easier to clean—simply wipe it down with a damp cloth after a muddy walk or beach session.

Which BioThane width is right for my dog?

We offer multiple widths to suit different needs. Our 13mm (Standard) width is lightweight and ideal for puppies and small-to-medium breeds. For large or high-power breeds, we recommend our 19mm (Heavy Duty) width for improved grip and a higher break strength.

Can I use a long line with a collar?

For safety, we always recommend attaching a long line to a well-fitted Y-front harness rather than a collar. This prevents neck injuries if your dog reaches the end of the line at speed, distributing the force safely across their chest.

Is the hardware on your long leads rust-proof?

At Wildhunde, we use premium Solid Brass Hardware on our lightweight and standard BioThane, and zinc alloy on our microlight BioThane. Both options are highly resistant to rust and corrosion, with brass being waterproof. This makes our leads the perfect choice for beach training and salt-water environments.

Does BioThane get slippery when wet?

One of the main benefits of BioThane is its consistent grip. While it is smoother than dry nylon, it does not become "slimy" or heavy when soaked, making it the most reliable choice for rainy days or beach training in Australia. That said, it does lose traction especially when you are utilising raw meat treats.

How do I clean and maintain my BioThane lead?

Maintenance is easy. After a muddy walk, just rinse the lead under warm water with mild dish soap and wipe it dry. Unlike leather, BioThane requires no conditioning and will not crack or rot over time.

Can I use a BioThane long line for tracking or nose work?

Absolutely. Our 3m and 5m leads are favorites for scent work because the material glides over sticks and through scrub without snagging. The "weightless" feel when dragged allows your dog to focus entirely on the task at hand.

Is BioThane chew-proof?

While BioThane is incredibly durable, it is not chew-proof. No lead is indestructible against a dog's teeth. We recommend supervising your dog during use and avoiding letting them gnaw on the lead to ensure it lasts for years.

If you do have a accident and your pup has a sneaky chew, we offer a repair service to help fix up your leash and keep it alive for years to come.
